In several rooms of an old townhouse in the city center, our hosts have created an extraordinary, creative space that serves the local community, as we witnessed firsthand. After a very good conversation, exchanging experiences, and making plans for the Pogranicza visit to Serbia in the spring of next year, the apartment began to fill with young people—students from the local graphic design technical school. Klara and Rosa collaborate closely with schools and other educational institutions in Subotica. Weronika Poncyljusz-Czyżewska presented our guests with the Film Collection of Borderland Stories, talked about the creation of animated films, the work of gathering stories, and building narratives about the place where we live. She encouraged the young people to engage in such work—it’s clear that Subotica holds many untold stories, visible on every street in the city. The most striking example might be the synagogue—this early 20th-century temple, built on a grand scale, attests to how important the Jewish past is to the city, towering over the square. To this day, it serves as a place of worship, even though the number of Jewish community members is much smaller than the number of seats in the temple's pews.
The day ended with Cafe Europa. A cozy venue by Lake Palić was filled with poetry written in Ukrainian, Serbian, Polish, and English. Poems, read by poets, seemingly separate, on this day resonated as one story about Europe. The evening was hosted by Weronika Czyżewska-Poncyljusz along with Vladimir Arsenic.
