The Music of the Place – five days with Paweł Kulczyński

Listening to places -- a photograph taken during the walk with Paweł Kulczyński

The Music of the Place Studio hosted Paweł Kulczyński whose stay in Sejny and Krasnogruda helped us develop the project of the sound map of Sejny. Our guest also gave a live performance in the White Synagogue.

Paweł is a sound artist, field recorder and the constructor of acoustic installations. He often performs his experimental music during open air events and works for theatre. In his work he uses versatile methods of synthesis, composing music, and sound space projections. His music is difficult to define. In his recent work he has included the motives of mass extinction, the mourning of the planet and climate change.

Before the performance, Paweł Kulczyński took an intuitive walk in order to listen to the sounds in different points and places in the town. Accompanying him, we could listen to the audiosphere using various microphones, each of them being differently tuned and with different sensitivity to sounds. Such walks make it possible for the participants to experience the world around you after you have taken the headphones off, to inspire your imagination and raises questions about the reality and credibility of field recordings, about the individuality of the person who is recording and about the likely artistic languages of such recordings.
In the conversation with Paweł Kulczyński, sound has been what is followed by the path of life and is what acts only in the experience thus escaping conceptualizations, words, interpretations and so it is something that simply happens.
